Here are some general search tips for the use of the search function in this website.

  • Phrase Search: or searching for an exact combination of words or symbols. You can do this by putting double quotes around the phrase you are looking for (i.e. "parent involvement" will search for places in the document when both "parent" and "involvement" appear in order).
  • To Exclude a Term: Put a "-" character in front of the search term you wish to exclude. In example, if one wanted to search for the term "parent" but exclude cases where the term surrogate appeared, you would type "parent -surrogate" and the search engine would search for pages that had parent, but not surrogate in them.
  • Wild Card: This method is most useful when you remember the first or last part of a search term, but do not know the whole term that you are looking for. To use this method you first type the portion of the method and then you add a "*" to either the end or the beginning of the partial term, depending upon which is the incomplete part. The reason to use this is that if one searchs for "parent" one will get results only for the term parent, but if one searched for "parent*" the search would include terms such as parent, parents, parental, etc.
  • Searching by Location: If one wanted to search just one or a selection of a few documents, that is also possible. For instance, if one wanted to search and make sure that the term "parent" appeared in chapter 7, section 3, one would type "parent @7-iep:7-3:document" and the search would search the document and return if the term was in that section.
